How Do We Work with the Global Collection

Research

Together with the museum’s partners, our staff has conducted several research projects, including “Syrian Child Refugees,” “Stories from Gaza: Growing Up Under Blockade,” and ongoing documentation of the children’s experiences during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Our global collection is also available for researchers worldwide who focus on topics such as children and war, children’s rights, and post-conflict societies, among others. To enhance accessibility and preserve its collection effectively, the WCM continuously invests in digitizing its archives and translating all materials into English.

Exhibition

We present stories from our global collection in our permanent exhibition in Sarajevo, as well as through exhibitions organized in various countries. So far, we have organized international exhibitions in Bucharest, Strasbourg, Prague, Kyiv, Seoul, and other cities. Notable venues where we’ve hosted exhibitions include Sarajevo City Hall, the Council of Europe, and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) General Conference. Over 200,000 visitors visited WCM’s travelling exhibitions, while our permanent exhibition in Sarajevo is visited by over 30,000 people every year.

Education

The museum is actively engaged in numerous educational initiatives. One such initiative is our Peace and Justice Education Resource Center, which provides teachers worldwide with activity plans based on the museum’s global collection. Additionally, the WCM participates in innovative projects like MEMENTOES, bringing together museums specializing in historical injustices, research institutes, and independent game developers to create educational video games. WCM has co-hosted educational conferences such as Children as Peacemakers in Divided Societies: Educational Approaches.

Was Your Childhood Affected by the War?

The War Childhood Museum invites individuals whose childhoods were affected by armed conflict to contribute their stories to our growing global collection. We collect personal belongings, as well as video and audio testimonies.
