The War Childhood Museum offers students from around the world the internship opportunity in its archives. One of these interns was Beatrice Sofia Urso, a 23-year-old political science student from the University of Siena.
Two years ago, Beatrice Sofia Urso visited Sarajevo and the War Childhood Museum for the first time, and the experience left a lasting impression on her. “I was in Sarajevo for a couple of days and visited the War Childhood Museum. Since my thesis focuses on children’s rights in conflict and post-conflict societies, the exhibition made a strong impression on me. It’s very different from all the other venues I usually see, like art museums or contemporary art museums,” Beatrice explains.
Inspired by the experience, Beatrice began thinking about interning at the WCM. “It occurred to me that doing an internship at the museum could enhance my understanding of what I want to focus on in my studies.” she adds. Beatrice reached out to the museum, which ultimately welcomed her as an intern.
Internship at the War Childhood Museum
During her two-month internship, Beatrice worked in the museum’s archives. “Working in the archive was an invaluable experience. Touching a real object that belonged to a child who grew up during the war evokes more empathy and respect than, let’s say, touching the Mona Lisa, “ Beatrice says..
Before her time at WCM, Beatrice’s understanding of war was shaped by an idealized, almost romanticized, portrayal often seen in films. “A soldier returning from a distant war, kissing his wife at home. But when I entered WCM, I realized what war truly is and how much I should be grateful for everything I have. Working at WCM truly changed my life perspective.”
Now back in Italy, Beatrice continues her studies, carrying with her not only the rich experiences from Sarajevo but also a cherished recipe for Bosnian pie. And while she has left the city and museum for now, Beatrice is certain this is not a final farewell.
